In 1987, Shah joined the BJP and worked closely with former Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Shah played a key role in Modi's rise to power in Gujarat and was instrumental in the BJP's victory in the 2002 Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections.


Shah's political career reached new heights in 2014, when the BJP won a decisive victory in the Indian general elections. Following the election, he was appointed as the President of the BJP, a position he held until 2020. During his tenure as the party president, Shah oversaw the BJP's growth and expansion across India, and played a key role in the party's victories in several state elections.


In 2019, Shah was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, from the Gandhinagar constituency in Gujarat. Later that year, he was appointed as the Union Minister for Home Affairs in the Government of India.
