What Is IIT?

 IIT stands for Indian Institutes of Technology, which are a group of prestigious autonomous public engineering and technology institutes in India. These institutes are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which has declared them as Institutes of National Importance. IITs are renowned for their quality of education, research facilities, faculty, and alumni.

History:

The first Indian Institute of Technology was established in Kharagpur, West Bengal, in 1951 with technical and financial assistance from the Government of the United Kingdom. After India's independence, the need for skilled engineers and scientists to aid the country's industrial and technological development was keenly felt, and thus, the Indian Institutes of Technology were established.


Campuses:

Currently, there are 23 IITs across India located in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and others. Each IIT has a unique campus and offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various fields of engineering, science, and technology.


Academics:

The academic curriculum of IITs is highly rigorous and challenging, and students are expected to perform at a very high level. The focus is on developing problem-solving skills, analytical abilities, and research aptitude. The programs are designed to provide a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, and also include courses in engineering, humanities, and social sciences.


Admissions:

Admission to IITs is highly competitive, and the selection process is based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). JEE is a national-level entrance exam that is conducted in two stages - JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The exam tests the student's knowledge and aptitude in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The top-ranking students are eligible for admission to the IITs.


Research:
