He served as a member of the upper house for over two decades and was regarded as a trusted aide of Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. He was known for his organizational skills and played a key role in the party's election campaigns in several states.

The scandal involved the illegal transfer of funds through hawala channels, and Ahmed Patel was named as one of the accused.
