In 1977, he was elected as a Member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Bharuch.


In 1985, Ahmed Patel was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time. He served as a member of the upper house for over two decades and was regarded as a trusted aide of Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
