Chiranjeevi – The Megastar of Telugu Cinema and Social Service
Introduction
Chiranjeevi, born as Konidela Siva Sankara Vara Prasad, is one of the most iconic and influential actors in Indian cinema. Fondly known as the "Megastar" of Telugu cinema, his career spans over four decades with unparalleled success in films, philanthropy, and even politics.
Early Life and Education
Chiranjeevi was born on August 22, 1955, in Mogalthur, a small village in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. His father was a police constable, and due to frequent transfers, Chiranjeevi studied in multiple schools. He completed his graduation in commerce from Sri Y N College in Narasapuram and later moved to Chennai to join the Madras Film Institute to pursue acting.
Film Career
Chiranjeevi made his acting debut in 1978 with the film "Punadhirallu". However, his first released film was "Pranam Khareedu". Throughout the 1980s and 90s, he emerged as a leading action hero with massive box-office hits like:
- Khaidi (1983)
- Gang Leader (1991)
- Indra (2002)
- Tagore (2003)
He became the first South Indian actor to be paid ₹1 crore per film and was often compared to Bollywood’s biggest stars. His dances, fight sequences, and mass appeal earned him a legendary fan base.
Political Career
In 2008, Chiranjeevi launched his political party called Praja Rajyam Party in Andhra Pradesh. In the 2009 elections, his party secured a decent number of seats, but later merged with the Indian National Congress in 2011. He also served as the Union Minister of Tourism in the UPA government.
Comeback to Cinema
After a brief political stint, Chiranjeevi made a grand comeback to films with "Khaidi No. 150" (2017), which was a massive box office success. Later, he starred in "Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy" (2019), a historical epic, and "Acharya" (2022). His son, Ram Charan, is also a leading actor in Telugu cinema.
Philanthropy and Social Work
Chiranjeevi established the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust in 1998, which includes a blood and eye bank that has helped lakhs of people. He is known for his humility and generous support toward health and education initiatives.
